The Spring season begins my main "shooting" season. April, May and June are great months to go out there and watch nature come alive. The weather is warm or at the very least mild and the flowers and trees are budding or blooming! This is a great time to shoot some flower close-ups at your 'macro' setting or using your macro lens. Mornings and evenings tend to be crisp and cool and often you would find that 'magic hour' light or maybe a cloudy sky creating a softer, diffused light. Each has its merits. Look for reflections and rising mist on ponds and lakes or during softer light, capture the punched up colors of spring. What's the icing on the cake? Exercise, getting close to nature and all that goodness for the mind, body and soul.

Students in my classes are sometimes hesitant for one reason or another on upgrading from a digital point & shoot camera to a 35mm DSLR. One reason, nowadays especially, is cost. I tell these students that there are many wonderful digital point & shoot cameras available on the market and with the pace of technology, improvement in digital technology offers us many other choices. Do a "google" search or checkout the online sites of bhphoto.com or adorama.com and you can search for the latest technology. Many of the recent point and shoots have advanced processing which is faster and more efficient in gathering light. Several are 'hybid' types which give you some options of a DSLR such as RAW selection, higher ISO's, GPS, etc....but at the same time, these cameras remain small and therefore portable with no fussing about buying lenses. Nikon, Canon, Sony and many more companies are competing and coming out with new options at lightning speed. So before you add to the 'money pit' and buy a DSLR you may not be ready for, do a thorough search on the latest point & shoot cameras or just contact me and I will do some research for you!

Aperture Priority Mode (AV or A) gives you hands-on creative control over your aperture (lens opening) therefore allowing you control over your DOF (Depth of Field).

Shutter Priority Mode (TV or S) gives you hands-on creative control over your shutter speeds and therefore how a moving "subject" will look on your final exposure.

I tell my students to invest their money into their optics and not so much with the camera.

If you hand-hold your camera when creating images, think about spending the extra money and buy lenses with built-in image stabilization. IS for Canon and VR for Nikon. Having image stabilization is an advantage especially when shooting telephoto and macro subjects.

Make it a habit to look up at the sky frequently....you will never know what you may be able to see and capture on your camera, which by the way, should be on you at all times. Point & Shoot cameras are perfect for these situations.
